In 1970, Herman and Grace Burggraf purchased Hanson's Hardware on the north side of Highway 2 between Johnson and Kaiser Avenues in Fosston, MN. Herman became known as "Hardware Hank" and employed each of his six children.

Building of a new store at the present location in Fosston began in the fall of 1977, with moving days in February of 1978.

For several years Burggraf's Hardware dealt with both United Hardware (as Hardware Hank) and with Ace Hardware Corporation, becoming an Ace Hardware dealer in 1986. In 1988 Ace Hardware became the main supplier of inventory for Burggraf's Ace Hardware.

In June of 1989 another hardware business was purchased Grand Rapids, MN. Herman's sons, Craig and Steve, moved to Grand Rapids to run the new store. They built a new building moving in on February 6th, 1990.

Herman retired December 31, 1993, selling his shares in the corporation to his sons, Craig, Mark, and Steve. Mark then took over management of the Fosston store January 1, 1994.

On June 19, 2005 Burggraf’s opened a new store in the Grand Cities mall in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Tony Gilson moved from the Grand Rapids store, to manage the Grand Forks location.

In 2012 Burggraf’s purchased the Walgreens building on Superior St in Duluth, MN. The building was renovated, and the new location opened November 5, 2012.
